By trade I am a teacher. I have worked for over 20 years in elementary schools as a teacher and then librarian. This year I have finally graduated and began as a high school librarian in Orleans Parish. Over the years I have made objects with children using a variety of materials and mediums. As a librarian I developed skills as a storyteller.
As a young child I used to watch my mother sit at the machine to sew my clothes. My grandmother always had a pair of knitting needles in her hands. I wanted to do that too. I taught myself how to knit and crochet. I made cross stitch samplers and dolls by hand. By my early teens I was finally given formal sewing training. From there I couldnt be stopped. I sewed almost everything I wore and in the 70s I took apart jeans and sewed them into skirts and purses.
Over the years my creative outlet was for personal use or gifts for friends and family. Then Steve and I decided to pursue this venture. I had the skills I needed and though I have no formal art training in color and design, I have a very good eye. Working as a team has been very exciting, and we are very proud of our new creations. |
